Alaska, USA: Ride the "last frontier"wilderness that is Alaska, the scenic wonderland high above the Arctic Circle

Alaska still remains one of the true "last frontier" destinations and offers a scenic overload for bikers, but with a few creature comforts. This 17 day ride begins by exploring the utterly stunning coastal fishing villages of Alaska before riding into the vast remote interior and riding the legendary Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay, a ride on every bikers bucket list. North Americas highest mountain, massive glaciers, wildlife, wild Alaskan rivers, abandoned mining towns, endless tundra and "only in Alaska" back country lodges all feature in this the Northern Hemispheres answer to Patagonia.

      Ride Profile

70% of this ride is on pavement; some sections of pavement can be potholed and narrow with tall shoulders and in some places "frost heaves" may be present. In the south there is a LOT of tourist traffic, drivers may be more intent on looking at the scenery than at the road!
30% of this ride will be on dirt. The vast majority of dirt is hard packed and is used by heavy transport, so not technical or difficult, however there are sections that can have loose gravel, washouts and can be rutted, especially where roadworks are being undertaken or have experienced recent rains. Generally these sections don't last long. It must be noted that the Dalton Highway is extremely changeable and can become slippery and muddy in sections if overnight rains have been experienced.

Some off-road experience is preferred for this tour.
On the more difficult sections pillions can travel in the support vehicle.

      Climate

It's summer in Alaska and we can expect some beautiful sunny weather and long sunlight hours, as we are visiting during the "midnight sun" season. Riding above the Arctic Circle we should expect some colder temperatures and possible rains. Weather can be extremely changeable with all four seasons experienced in one day.

We can expect temperatures of around 15 - 25 Celsius / 60 - 80 Fahrenheit during the day, very cold at night.
