Tasmania: A motorcycle training event and tour into the superb north-west of Tasmania with Simon Pavey

Compass Expeditions are thrilled to have world renown, Dakar Rally racer Simon Pavey and the Off Road Skills team conduct a motorcycling training school in Tasmania’s spectacular Tamar Valley. Simon has competed in 10 Dakar events thus far having completed an amazing 8 of them. The training weekend will be followed by an amazing 5 day motorcycle ride-out / tour with Simon as the ride leader where participants can practice what they have learnt. This is a unique training experience where you can learn from one of the world’s very best riders.

The 5 day ride out will start and end in the beautiful city of Launceston (“Launy” as the locals call it), in between we will visit sunken tracks in temperate rain forests, ride remote, rugged and challenging trails - including the Western Explorer - through remote wilderness country and spend time in the beautiful surrounds of Strahan, stunningly located on Macquarie Harbour. We will finish off by riding the stunning Jacob's Ladder in the Ben Lomond Ranges.

Ride Profile

The weekend course is 100% off road and riders will be taught how to manage steep inclines, loose gravel and rocky surfaces which are all part of this training experience. Participants will learn all the essential skills to become a competent and safe off-road rider. This is the training course that Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman completed before their epic Long Way Round ride.

The 5 day adventure following the course is 60% on road. Some sections of pavement can be narrow with sharp twisties and blind corners. Steep drop offs are the norm.

40% of the ride-out is off road. All types of surfaces are to be expected, from loose shale to very steep ascent and descents through thick forests. Many dirt tracks are very winding with blind corners and massive drop offs. Some tracks can have very large potholes, loose deep gravel or can be muddy depending on recent rainfalls.

Although some time is spent on road the majority of time is spent off road.
