Cairo to Cape Town Expeditions 2017 – Sudan to Ethiopia – Crew Report Back to News List

After our first camp night over the border into Sudan we started heading south through an ever changing desert landscape, along busy and rough roads to Karima. Here we visited the less famous pyramids of Jebel Barkal.
These were walking distance from our hotel and just by the side of the road. It was refreshing to be totally alone and wander these smaller but amazing pyramids. The following day we had the chance to visit the Meroe pyramids as well, but only after a little bit of sand riding. Our first for the trip. A few offs and wobbly moments but everyone enjoyed the adventure.
The accommodation at Meroe were preset tents with private washrooms each with its own view of sunset over the pyramids.
Back onto the highway filled with crazy bus drivers and trucks, the desert continued south to Khartoum. We had two nights here enjoying sightseeing, a bit of bike maintenance and a great meal where we unfortunately had to farewell Mick who was returning to Australia.
Our next camp, in a spectacular clearing amongst the acacia trees, was topped off with a meal prepared by a team of cooks who had followed us for the day from Khartoum. They camped the night with us and also prepared a hearty breakfast before we headed to the border crossing to Ethiopia.
Brendan was joining us at the border, replacing Mick and it was great to see his smiling face on the Ethiopian side.
