CAIRO TO CAPE TOWN 2017 – Zimbabwe to Chobe, Botswana – CREW REPORT Back to News List

20170315_074514The most amazing hotel we were to stay at in Zimbabwe was the lodge at the ancient ruins.
This hotel is a series of lodges built into the mountain side integrating the massive granite boulders into the construction of the rooms and buildings. From here we visited the great Zimbabwe ruins. An city which was the ruling centre of an an ancient empire in the late iron age.

We then moved on to Gweru and Antelope Park. What can I say to describe this experience? Walking with lions, meeting lion cubs and feeding the king of the jungle. Some chose a horse back safari whilst others paddled a canoe at sunset. A fantastic place to stop for two nights and relax before the adrenaline charge of Victoria Falls.

The Zimbabwe police have quite a reputation for being tough and creative. 16 traffic stops in one day on the way to Victoria Falls tested our patience and lightened our wallets.
Having survived the experience and arriving in Victoria Falls, the roar of the water could be clearly heard from our hotel. The volume of water thundering over the falls was so massive the spray cloud obscured the view from most of the observation platforms and the spray cloud turned to rain the closer you got.

The choice of activities enjoyed was impressive and the riders went white water rafting, took helicopter flights over the falls, horse back safaris, went zip lining and even a giant swing into the gorge whilst others enjoyed a high tea.

An easy border crossing into Botswana landed us in Kasane in time for an afternoon cruise on the Chobe river. We were so lucky to see huge herds of elephants drinking on the river banks and grazing on the grasses which grow on the flood plains as the sun set.
